Exercise- working up a sweat!

Hi ladies,
I must say how impressed I am by the amount of girls participating on the Volleyball team. You girls look strong and are developing great skills for the game.
There is a reason we try to get you involved in sports through Phys. Ed and school teams- being active is VERY important to your health. Working up a sweat gets your heart pumping which keeps your heart in good condition. Our bodies crave exercise, they are built to move. Regular exercise can help prevent diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Finally, when you exercise you strengthen your muscles, bones, and ligaments- keeping you strong and able to engage in and enjoy your daily activities.
With all these reasons, is there any reason not to exercise? How do you feel about exercise, do you feel like you get enough? Do you want more? If you don't like it, why? I know it's not for everyone but I have lots of ideas for people of all different ability levels so let's talk...exercise!!

  1. Great post Mrs.Jack, i agree exercise is very important for the human body, and also healthy food is too. For example protein and exercise should work together for people who want to be in shape, protein helps strengthen bones and muscles as well as exercise.
One question about food, what is an inflammatory? Because some foods have a negative number to tell you how much the food is an inflammatory, (e.g. mildly inflammatory -48)

  2. Great question Donna! I am actually just starting to learn about inflammation myself. What I have learned so far is that when foods have chemicals in them (such as pesticides, hormones, antibiotics) or if they are overly refined or processed then they become "toxic" (not so good for us). These toxins build up inflammation inside our bodies which can cause pain or poor health. Sometimes our bodies have sensitivities to some foods and we aren't aware of it. A sensitivity is different but similar to an allergy. For example, some people feel sick when they eat wheat or milk. They don't get a rash or require any treatment but their body is reacting to something it isn't able to digest properly. Our bodies are smart machines and it can take a long time to figure out how to fuel it in order to reach its fullest potential. As I learn more, I will try to explain better but I hope this helps.
As for the numbers your refer to, I haven't come across that before but I am sure it just has to do with the food's inflammatory capacity (ie., you will experience a great deal of inflammation or not). Every body is different though and one food type may not be right for everyone. What IS important is that you make sure you have a good balance of everything and be aware of what you are putting into your body- it's so important!!
Thanks for the question Donna, I love that you are thinking about this!! Good stuff!

    1. Wow, this seems really important and serious, its sad that not many people know about it i think its because of it not being said on the labels. Ive never even saw it on nutrition labels, i only became aware of it when seeing it on a website for whole wheat bread nutrition facts. so for people who are lack toast and tolerant (wrong spelling) get sick from milk's chemical level, and it makes sense because when they get milk from cows the farmers inserted hormones to make them grow fast or something like that. Im assuming that natural pure and real foods wouldn't have any chemicals in them? Or would they have just way less? But since most of our bodies can handle a lot, we dont get sick unfortunately others cant, and thats where allergies come in. Also i have another question about nut allergies, would nuts have chemicals in them? or is there completely different reason?

    2. Donna, I am so so so impressed with your thinking about this subject. Thank you! So to start, lactose intolerance is a bit different than a reaction to "chemicals"- it is the inability to digest lactose which is a sugar found in milk and dairy products. There are many people divided on the issue of milk. Milk IS GOOD FOR US but some people recommend that we drink organic to ensure that the milk you drink is indeed free of any hormones or antibiotics. Other people think this argument is bogus and that the cows are healthy and happy and aren't given extra supplements to increase their milk supply etc. It is up to each person to make up their own mind and do their own research to make sure you are as healthy as you want to be.
When you buy your produce (veggies/fruit) organic, they have been harvested without the use of harmful pesticides. Farmers often need to use some kind of chemical to keep pesky animals from eating their crops but the chemical they use is not harmful and are often natural.
You are bang on about the allergies... some people have them, some don't. But sometimes people don't realize that they are reacting to a food that their body doesn't "like". For instance, when my husband Mike eats wheat, he gets bloated (stomach puffy)... he is going to be so happy I am sharing this with all of you but it's my best example!! :) .... he steers clear of wheat because he knows it makes him "puffy" ahahahah
Ok so for nuts, it depends on what kind of nut. Nuts grow on trees, these are mostly clean but I am sure nut farmers have to spray the trees with something to keep animals off (will have to look into this). I do know that peanuts grow in the ground so maybe they aren't as good as the ones that grown on trees? Hmmm.. there's a good research project for us!!

    3. Hahahaha, Its kinda cool how people have different allergic reactions...
Thank you Mrs.Jack for all the information, i think i know all the basics to the topic of inflammation in our bodies from food, enough to do some more research myself.

  6. Lisa!! Great to hear from you and great comment- this is probably a concern shared by many of your friends. I TOTALLY hear what your parents are saying and it is important (as I know you know) to respect their wishes soo..... here's a solution- get a yoga mat ($10.00 at shoppers) and try this:
    10 squats
10 split squats (split legs and do lunge squats 10 on each side)
10 jump squats (all the way down and jump up)
Repeat this 3 times... you will be OUT OF breath

    then....

Get into a plank position (on hands and feet- body is flat)- pull one knee at a time up to your chest. Go slow for 30 on each side then go fast for 10 seconds.

Repeat this 3 times.... you better be OUT of breath ... throw in some push ups while you are waiting to do the next repeat- 10 of them!

Last, lay on your back holding a ball between your feet (make sure the ball is lightweight because you don't want it to fall on your head) Raise your feet up and at the same time, raise your arms up... when your hands meet your feet, grab the ball and lower yourself (with the ball in your hands) back down to the floor. Repeat, this time handing the ball to your feet then back to the floor... repeat 10 times.

This is a good workout and totally doable from one spot- no need to go outside. Save your outdoor time for when you are with friends or with your parents.

Do make sure you drink lots of water and stretch afterwards!!

I know you girls all HATE waking up early in the morning but I will be starting a running club in April to prepare for the TDSB's fun run taking place on Saturday June 9th. I hope you will all come out for it!! This will be a great opportunity to get some exercise outside!!

    Thanks Lisa!!
